The Tactica M.020 Camping Tool is the lightest and smallest thing I think I have with me on outdoor adventures yet it becomes one of the most practical items to use.
This multitool is ultra-lightweight and small yet it comes in handy for so many scenarios from pulling up well entrenched tent pegs through to starting a camp fire. With lots and lots in between, for instance, screwdriver, sundial and tin opener. On the box it names at least 11 uses but once you get using it you actually find more.
I used to carry around bigger tools and penknife kits but I realised that the knife was not the major need, the outdoor adventure can be more nuanced than that and Tactica has definitely seen what is needed more.
In this light weight and smal form I can simply have it in my wallet and not worry about if I have it or not.
It is so light and thin I have no excuse not to have it in my wallet for all sorts of occasions when the need arises. Let’s take a look at some of the things you may find this tool useful for and more.
Design
This multitool is very very light. A mere 35g (1.02 oz), made of stainless steel. The small dimensions are 92mm long, 56mm at its widest and only 3mm thick.
Yes so small and light. Fit it in your wallet, in your pocket or slide into anywhere within your packback. It is not going to take up any room at all really.
Firestarter
Let’s start with the unique main part, the fire starting rod. Simply slide off the ferro rod that is attached at the bottom end of the tool, and you can strike it against the serrated edge that is within the tool.
It works really well and is great for when you haven’t got your lighter with you. If you have some dry thin bits of kindling or straw then the sparks soon take hold. Please use responsibly if using for the first time this kind of fire starter.
Rope Cutter
Next to the serrated edge section of the tool is a sharpened section. This makes a great rope cutter or a line cutter for fishing folk.
Tent-Peg Puller
With the ferro rod removed you see 2 pointed parts at the end of the tool. The first one being a great tent-peg puller for when you have gone a bit crazy hammering in your tent pegs.
Just hook the tool around the peg and pull up for making it all easier.
It also makes a good little pry bar.
Can Opener and Screwdriver
Opposite the peg-puller is a similar looking pointed edge but used as a simple tin opener to help you get to your food easier.
On the outside of this though you will see what can be used as a flat head screwdriver. Unfortunately there is no phillips screwdriver attachment.
Sundial
Now let us head to the other end of the tool. The first thing you will see is a little hole with numbers like a clock around. This is the sundial. This is a more extreme need, if you have no watch or phone then you may need the humble rudimentary sundial.
To use, first with your compass find out where north is and line the tool up so that the top end, where the sundial is, is pointing north.
Stand a little twig in the hole and the shadow of that twig gives an ‘approximate’ time of day.
Bottle Opener
The gap below the top is easily recognisable as a bottle opener. Even when not on adventures this can come in handy at home or round a friends.
Around the bottle opener are the hours that are used in the sundial.
Rope Tensioner
The two gaps in the middle of the tool, triangular shaped, are great for using as an emergency rope tensioner. Good for just in case on a wild camping excursion.
Measurements
Down the sides of the multi-tool you can see 2 mini rulers so to speak. One measures in inches and one in mm and cm.
Conclusion
The Tactica M.020 Camping Tool is a tool I will keep in my pocket/wallet for any eventuality not just when out camping or hiking.
The extreme light weight of it plus size means I don’t have to think about whether to pack or not. It is a unique tool that looks at things very differently than tradition tools that although may have little extra accessories like penknife but can start to get bulkier and overkill.
