It was time for a new adventure in a lovely area I hadn’t been for a while, the picturesque countryside of Wiltshire.
The Tentbox was on the roof and ready so we headed for Devizes Camping and Caravan Club Site which is perfectly placed for a few days of discovery, walking, nature and relaxation. In fact you can walk out the gates and be straight onto the Kennet and Avon Canal towpath.
The campsite was indeed perfect for everything we needed from location to amenities as well as having a beautiful and peaceful ambience plus a sense of escapism yet together with a community spirit.
Location
The campsite is wonderfully placed for adventures or sight seeing of any type. Just off the A365 (Bath Road) right between the town of Devizes and Melksham in the Wiltshire countryside.
A huge plus is the fact that the campsite sits right beside the Kennet and Avon Canal. Perfect for quiet walks and of course dog adventures. As you will read you will discover that there is so much to see and do in the area, something for everyone.
In fact you are enough away from it all to catch the stars above you in the night sky.
Campsite Features
I found the Devizes Camping and Caravan Club Site has a real quiet and relaxing ambience to it. There may be 115 pitches but it really did not feel like that many even when it reached weekend.
The spacing on the site is fantastic and the space for each pitch is greater than many other sites on my travels.
Facilities Available
The site is equipped with essential facilities to ensure a comfortable stay. In the middle of the site is a block containing ample and well kept washrooms, showers, and laundry facilities.
Near to this you have an adventure playground that looked great and unique for the children to safely play.
For us dog owners the options could not be better. Of course you have the canal right by the site to walk along. Straight into the quiet countryside. But on site you have a field where you can actually let your dogs run safely off lead, or alternatively a woodland walk if on lead.
There is a small shop on site for many of your needs but with lovely towns within a short drive you have plenty of options.
For a dining treat there is a lovely bonus in that on Saturdays a fish and chip shop does a delivery to the campsite when ordered in advance. Some of the best chips I have had in a long long time.
We found the free wifi to work exceptionally all around the site.
Pitch Options
Guests can choose from a variety of pitch options, including grass and hardstanding pitches, catering to both tents, motorhomes, campervans and caravans. Each pitch is spacious, providing ample room for cooking, relaxation and outdoor activities.
Every type of camper was using the site happily from walk in backpackers to seasoned caravanners.
Local Attractions
Beyond the campsite, it was time to explore locally too. A perfect walk to start with is to go out the campsite, straight onto the Kennet and Avon Canal and walk the 2.5 miles along the towpath to the historic Caen Hill Locks, a series of 29 locks on the Kennet and Avon Canal, is a must-visit. This engineering marvel is not only beautiful but also offers a unique glimpse into the area’s history.
Of course a little further along the canal is the medieval market town of Devizes itself. A charming place to discover. Rich in history and surrounded by gorgeous Wiltshire landscapes. It has an 11th Century Norman Castle and famous markets. The historic Wadworth Brewery is situated in Devizes and definitely worth taking the brewery tour.
Only a little further afield with short drives you have so many options. within short drives you could be at:
The magnificent Stonehenge
Devizes White Horse
The historic city of Bath
Lacock, A beautiful idylic village
You can also easily visit the lovely town of Bradford-on-Avon.
Local Food and Drink Recommendations
Even though you feel away from it all in the Wiltshire countryside you can get to some gorgeous food and drink options quite easily.
Right next to the site is The Three Magpies Pub. The beer garden looked wonderful in the sunshine and so did the desserts! Walking along the canal away from Devizes you have more pub choices like The Barge Inn or The Brewey Inn.
Devizes is also a super option and is home to a variety of local eateries offering delicious meals made from fresh ingredients. There are many places serving hearty meals after a good days adventure. For those seeking a more unique culinary experience, the town boasts several cafés and bakeries known for their artisan treats. Exploring local food markets can also yield delightful surprises and an opportunity to sample regional specialties.
Conclusion
The Devizes Camping and Caravan Club Site offers an exceptional opportunity to connect with nature while enjoying a wealth of activities and attractions.
The combination of stunning surroundings, facilities, and a welcoming atmosphere makes it a wonderful place to stay for camping enthusiasts and families. Whether you’re looking for adventure or relaxation, this site and the area has something to offer everyone.
